Alright we're starting to close the second morning. I got through the first one mainly because the oversleep was still so close. I know I'll have a lot tougher time this time around. I'm planning to go jogging when I wake up from my second nap. I've not exercised anywhere near enough since starting this - or overall during this month.

I forgot to do the typing test, so I'll do it now. Before that though, what is wrong with me? That 6 hour sleep messed me up bad, I guess. It's like I'm starting all over again. I'm missing nap after nap but not really even getting tired. Well, maybe this pushes me through that morning.

Okay, I'm beginning to question the relevance of this test. Sure, I overslept, but shouldn't that be a bad thing? Apparently 6 hours a night is enough and you'll be well off with it. I didn't do records but improved from yesterday clearly and those are pretty good results anyway.

The start of the new day. Nothing special here to mention, I'm probably going for normal schedule today. You know, the uberman, staying awake in the morning, etc. At least gonna try that. For now I feel normal.

As for typing speed, I guess those prove that something's wrong. I might not feel particularly tired, but they keep deteriorating. Well finnish score actually went up from last result, but still, I struggled heavily with typos.

Oversleep
About 6-12

Well everything is starting to go to hell like in other attempts. I'm not yet giving up, I still want to do one final uberman run, but it's hard when you can't survive one full day without fucking up.

Once I've survived past one morning I'll shift to Everyman, when I oversleep. I just want to give my record nap streak a run for it's money. I just have very bad resistance against tiredness.

I don't know whether this failure to sleep has anything to do with oversleep. I watched Simpsons Movie for the first time just before going to sleep and failed to really clear my head for the naptime.

I have no idea whether I slept 5 or 15 minutes, all I know is that I barely got asleep. I still recognized that I had visited altered state of mind, so it's a successful nap - nice for a change. The most important thing though is that I've felt great the whole day. We'll see what tomorrow brings. The idea is to for once survive through morning without oversleeps. If it's needed, I'll watch the Simpsons while standing to avoid falling asleep.

Day 8 - Mornings Are Still Impossible

It's kind of weird that I have no trouble while sitting, but if I start laying down I instantly start to struggle - and then in mornings I just pass out all the sudden despite sitting. This is certainly weird behaviour from my brain. Also, why doesn't the sleep dep escalate? None of what I've read about polyphasic sleep has actualized. I feel I'm not mentally the sharpest, but very close, close enough for gained 5-7 hours a day, even with oversleeps.

My aim tomorrow is just to avoid the oversleeps. I said I'll do the extra nap in SPAMAYL mentality, but we'll see. If I'm totally dead in the morning, then fine, I'll do it. I'd like to manage to adapt to real Uberman though. Also I'm interested to see if I'd not do the oversleep, whether I'd struggle for the whole day or just the couple of first phases.

I feel like I'm pretty free to do anything - I'm sort of partly adapted. I feel I'm not accumulating sleep deprivation as I'm getting REM often enough during my naps.

I just watched a Simpsons episode right after waking up and amazingly I didn't fall asleep, but it must have been close; although I don't remember missing anything, I entered different state of mind. I need to be more careful from now on. I want to avoid all the extra sleeps.

As for my typing speeds, my top speed keeps deteriotating. Is it a mark that I'm beginning to get sleep-deprived? It doesn't seem a temporary hitch for sure, but we'll be wiser tomorrow.

I've been putting my computer alarm to sound every few minutes and I have my headphones on. It's really effective in keeping me in alert state - I always startle when the sound bangs all the sudden and sends a surge of adrenaline through my body.

To be honest I'm completely undecided what I do tomorrow morning. SPAMAYL-styled naps really didn't seem to solve anything on the basis of one morning - I'm still destroyed at that time and will still oversleep and can't help it at all. However if I wake up from an oversleep those extra naps might help in evening out the groggedness, but I'm not even that sure about that.

Only staple seems to be that I'm tired morning to noon and completely fresh afternoon - small hours, peaking at around midnight. Now I would like to know if it stays that way if I don't oversleep in the morning. I guess that's my next morning's experiment. It might lead to wasting a few hours, but they'd be wasted sleeping anyway so whatever.

I keep pounding these solid naps in. Though I have to say I feel more suspectible to sleepiness than usual...

On typing test I made a new record for English, but really struggled to type fast. I guess I'm not my freshest any more.

After some point I just passed out and overslept for at least an hour. I decided that's enough and turned to SPAMAYL.

I try to follow as closely the original program as possible, but now I have to fend for myself in this bout of tiredness. Let's see if I can beat this morning tiredness with well coordinated naps, cause so far I've just kept passing out without a warning. Hard to adjust when you keep oversleeping. My aim is to need as little extra naps as possible and for the most part stick to the naps on the original times.

I reset stats because after this nap I accidentally fell asleep couple of times. Only 10-15 minutes both, but as they're unintentional it sucks. I've been struggling to stay awake, I don't know why, perhaps it's the extra naps and changing the schedule. We'll see in coming days whether the extra nap or two will help me and whether it'll change my mental clarity for the rest of the day. As of current I'm now feeling fine, I could probably go laying on the bed without fear of passing out unintentionally.

It was a supershort nap but it hit the spot.. Or so I thought. I continued watching footie while lying down and struggled to stay awake. I'm not in fact sure if I fell asleep for a moment but as I can't be sure, I'm going to deny everything. It's not superhard tiredness, if I'd just get up I'd repel it easily, but I want to watch my footie while lying around.

I'm just amazed how clear my head is. My test scores improved from yesterday, but aren't still at their best. Close enough.

I did my first proper training session under this attempt. I have had motivation problems regarding my training but now I managed to put in an effective upper body workout. I will be easing myself back to training slowly, I'd hope to be better adapted before trying anything too drastic.

There's no room for mistakes any more. Next mistake and we're shifting to Everyman as week is full soon. But at least I ought to be fresh once I clear this initial tiredness. Besides, Everyman doesn't seem so bad.

Solid nap, I got a bit distracted before going to sleep but in the end got asleep quite fast. I'm not really tired, but I think that my thought processes are finally starting to take a hit because of all the sleep deprivation.

I've had REM on second and third naps so far, so I'm starting to expect one in next couple of naps. Hopefully without the help of oversleeps.

Alright 4 am. now and I finally start to feel a little tired. I've been just watching Simpsons the whole time, you know passively watching, which was my demise in last attempt. I would always get tired for not doing anything but watching something and end up either falling asleep or having those nodding microsleeps.

I did the typing tests hour later than usual and it might be that that showed or then again, I might've been off anyway. I made lots of errors and it took off my pace significantly in both tests. Still I'm typing pretty fast though.

That seems like a sort of mark of failure again. I have zero recollection about what has happened, but my computer was on stand-by mode and I haven't put my computer on it for weeks. There's only three days Uberman attempt left.

It's kind of hard when you don't know what went wrong. I mean why my clock was waking me up just when it was? I don't remember putting it on. But apparently I've woken up from my nap at 6 am. but for some reason went back to sleep almost instantly. I mean that's the worst, the judgement clouding after some point of sleep dep. No reason to keep dwelling on this though. I'll just try to continue as if nothing happened.

Everything has changed. It was easy just 8 hours ago. Now I'm frustrated at oversleeping while still being very tired. But what can I do? My brain tricked me to sleeping. I remember now that I had some rationalization for sleeping. I don't remember what it was, but I remember that there was such. I could write more, but I'd just be repeating myself, so I'll just shut up.

You have to wonder if this would be this easy without the morning oversleep. I enjoy being almost fully functional though.

I'm not tired, and I'm basicly functioning well at the moment, but there's something weird in my brain processes at the moment. I've been watching the Simpsons and writing short reviews after the episodes and I've noticed that right after I've watched the episode, I don't remember details very well and usually have to skim along the episode to recollect how the episode exactly went. Memory overall seems to function differently.

That oversleep really kickstarted my REM cycles, I have to say. Three REM-naps in a row and what's best, I actually woke up like minute before alarm. At the moment I'm really enjoying myself and I'm expecting this to continue at least until next morning. The 5 am. - 10 am. is probably the most critical area for my success at the moment, I really have to gather all of my willpower there.

We're well into our fourth day and even with the one oversleep I can safely say that I've slept under 8 hours in last 100 hours. Yet it seems to have no effect in my performance. I still equalled my record in Finnish and made a new one in English.

That what I wrote 20 minutes ago doesn't make much sense now, nor did it make sense when I wrote it, but it stays. I love how I'm messed up from all the sleep deprivation.

Who's had an easy nap? Me. Who's had hell of a time trying to get up and awake enough to sit on the computer? Me.

I'm absolutely miserable. I'm cold, hungry and not to mention fuckin' tired! I can't seem to think straight at all. On the top of that I had a nightmare. These are the testing times I guess, given that it's the pre-designed toughest time in the clock.

I guess I'm past the worst. I had some eyes closing some time ago, but I didn't actually fall asleep, not ever for a minute. Now I can pretty savely do what I want for a while.

Combination of keeping busy and it being afternoon has made this phase pretty easy. When I woke up I had to walk around for a while to get my head clear, I had pretty wild thoughts.

This is weird. I hardly feel like I'm on Uberman. Granted it's only day four and my previous attempt had a similar start, but still I have to wonder what's this all about. Day 3 - Passing Out & Missing Naps

I'm amazed how easy this is. Here I am and not a slightest of sign of tiredness on sight. I had slight headache immediately after waking up, but it passed. Only 8 more naps and we're in our record run!

On typing test my results were pretty much the same. I made new record in English typing, but only by few keys per minutes, while I failed to reach the amazing speed of Finnish typing test, but came close enough. I don't think there's anything to say about my performance so far.

Alright, 2½ hours into this phase and finally something starts to feel! I'm getting more tired, but it's nothing challenging, I can still sit down without a worry. I could even passively just watch something, I'm refreshed enough. But I gotta keep an eye on that mental state before it gets worse. There's only little over an hour to go before next nap. That could be a tricky one to get up from.

Okay, as usual there's some sort of snowball effect in tiredness. Once you get a little tired, you're soon bound to be very tired. This isn't particularly nasty yet, but I feel uncomfortable. I don't feel like doing anything. I guess I might as well start gaming something to stimulate myself a bit.

Another solid nap. Very tired first half an hour, I didn't flat out fall asleep but there was moments where I wasn't exactly concious. So as expected, this seems to have set itself to be the toughest of all phases.

I went running to refresh myself and it worked, I feel great again.

I really struggled to get up from this nap, but eventually did - however I passed out while sitting on the computer and slept for a hour or so. That means that we're starting our streakbuilding from the zero.

Ugh, I passed out again - perhaps for only five minutes this time, but right now I'm really struggling and there's still an hour to go before my nex official nap.

Kinda shame that I had to oversleep. It's not that it would've been hard to avoid, my tiredness was only at low level, getting up would've averted those extra naps. Every 'official' nap has been so solid so far, I've gotten to sleep, fallen asleep fast and got up fast almost every time. This time I had REM as well, but I can't remember what the hell it was about. Besides, I only got REM because I overslept just before it.

I forgot my nap. I got so into what I was doing that when I realized I should be sleeping there was only five minutes left to sleep. I tried to sleep for that five minutes, but I was too awake to fall asleep.

Okay and tiredness creeps in once again. Still a hour til nap.

There was couple of tired moments during this phase, but overall everything went well in the last to phases. I had my share of fuck-ups today and there has certainly been damage for adaptation, but it's still pretty fast cleared if I keep my head. I'd say that today's mistakes were unnecessary and pretty easily avoidable. I'll keep these errors in my mind tomorrow and try to avoid repeating them. That should make it easy to get through tomorrow.

Day 2 - Only Minor Hitches

First nap of the night is imminent.. and I'm surprised how good I feel. I've kept myself busy and have my hands full at the moment (that is partially the reason I ended up giving Uberman another go despite enjoying monophasic sleep again).

I'm not sure even if I slept at all, but I drifted thereabouts in the nap's end, so that's close enough for me. The difficulties in falling asleep are actually positive - it tells me that shifting the cycles around did make this midnight nap easier.

But damn I typed fast! I'm not tired enough that it would affect really my performance and the practice is really starting to kick in. 400 keys per minute is just in my reach soon and then it's just about converting that speed to english sentence test as well.

Top nap. I woke up early but had the enjoyment of lying there in the warmth for five full minutes before my alarm would went off. Ahh... I wish I was there now. Nearly halfway to record in succesful naps in a row. It feels possible, but we'll hit the first true tough spot tonight.

Everything is flowing very smoothly. I've settled on the routine very well. I didn't have any particularly hard moments during last phase and hopefully not this phase either, but I think night will have it's hard moments.

Alright, midnight closing in and all I've done is watching some footie. Despite doing this passive stuff tiredness is not bothering me. Weird. Another great start coming up for some reason?

It went as predicted. With normal "night's" sleep it's too early to go to bed, but I gave it a try anyway. Next nap might still be too early as well.

I really struggled to write in English for some reason. Whereas my Finnish typing speed was amazing, despite the fact that I made a big number of typos - my real speed was probably nearing 400 keys per minute without the mistakes.

Alright second nap nearing and I'm tiring out pretty nicely. I'm pretty sure the second nap is going to be success.

I was brutally tossed awake just when I had fallen asleep. I had some thoughts that my waking mind certainly didn't create, so maybe I was having REM, but it might've been just those hypnagological stuff before all the thoughts mess-up. I'm starting to really tire. Now I need to really concentrate on staying awake for the first time. Soon we'll see if swapping the cycles has done any good, but day will change before that.

Restart in 40 minutes

New week, new try. I've turned my sleeping cycles around, we'll see if it helps me one bit, but I promise to give this a honest effort this time and not give up the first time I start feeling a little uncomfortable. I woke up 15:25 today so I'll probably miss the first nap, but other than that there's nothing special going on. I guess I'll do the writing test again tonight. It's pretty trivial though, I don't think anything has changed.

I've shifted my schedule a bit as well. These are the new sleeping times:

Another Restart

Apparently I forgot to post about my progress, anyway I felt so bad in the second night I decided to quit after I overslept. I am planning a restart on 20th just to experiment if turning your cycles really helps. My current sleep is something around 5-15.

Day 1 - Hard Start

It's the usual trouble. I'm now used to monophasic sleep unlike in August attempt. Before that attempt I didn't enjoy monophasic sleep, something didn't "click". But now I'm totally into it. I'm recalling dreams, really sleeping in and I need some time to fall asleep again. I'm not falling asleep in a click like at best when I was napping during last attempt. 20 minutes is just the time I get tired enough to fall asleep. But small trouble at the start was expected.

So I just did the typing tests. Not much can be deduced from them, I shouldn't be having any sleep deprivation. My control result for Finnish was top stuff from me, though that score is still too big of a drop, I just couldn't get it going for some reason. English result improved as practise is starting to show.

Uh-huh. This isn't good. I feel absolutely terrible. I didn't know sleep-deprivation could hit me this hard. Already! Damn you 8+ hour darkness! I actually lied in bed until 6:25, but luckily I was awake for the whole time, just shifting my alarm later minute after minute. Bed feels so good, it's takes huge amount of willpower to get up. But I must reprogram myself back to springing up instantly.

At least I'm not waking up with a sore throat.

I woke up very early and had to wait for a long time for the alarm. In fact, it never came as I got up suspicious whether it was on exactly 9:59. That said, supershort sleep was helpful at getting me up. Now it's easy sailing for the daytime.

To be honest I don't remember sleeping, but my there was light jaw pain and I had a sore throat, both are symptoms that normally come from sleeping, well sore throat is still aftermath of the flu, but anyway, it seems to indicate that I indeed did sleep. I managed to come up with a good idea for a writing all the while too, so it was a productive 20-minute for me.

These things happen in day one. I was just starting to creep into sleep when the alarm sounded. There was distractions that kept me partly awake but mostly it was just lack of being tired.

Day is pretty much over and I'm relieved. I'm extremely tired. It's 20 minutes to nap time, luckily. But I know in my heart that I'm not in for a happy time tonight. Getting up is a challenge in itself. At the moment I have no back-up alarms, so if I sleep through my phone, then I oversleep. The encouraging thing is that I have done that very little, barely at all recently. But I really have a feeling for a good night's sleep right now. I hate the thought of going to bed now only to wake up 20 minutes later feeling even more destroyed. I'm going to publish this now, wish me luck to the second day.. I'm going to need it. I'm not keeping my hopes up for success.

Final Attempt Imminent

Final fight for freedom is about to start. I've slept my last monophasic sleep (hopefully) for a while and I woke up from it 10:00 today. My sleeping times this time will be:

This attempt will be a bit different from the last two. It might be more like the March attempt. Autumn has crept in and nights are dark already. I think that darkness is my worst enemy even if during the August attempt nights were the easy part. This time though my inner clock is in sync with day so darkness will really be a problem. I expect them to be at least, we'll see about that. That said, darkness can be useful. It still isn't too cold outside to easily go for a walk in the middle of the night. I hardly think that I can fall asleep in the middle of pitch black darkness, I'd suspect that be too scary.

I'll give myself a week to adapt to Uberman. If it doesn't work, I'll shift to Everyman, which I'm almost certain I can sustain. I'll be monitoring my motor skills by testing my typing speed daily, or should I say nightly, two hours after waking up from first nap of each day. I'll use www.typera.tk site to this and I will be doing two test - Finnish words, 1 min to test my max speed and English sentences 2 min to actually involve my brain a bit to it. I'll do one or two attempts depending on how I feel the first attempt went. If I feel I can do better I'll do another attempt.

Here's the control results that I just got, keys per minute:
Finnish 1 min: 361
English 2 min: 282

I actually improved in the Finnish test hugely in my second attempt - I've written mostly English lately. But I got into the groove in the second attempt.

I've also been sick during past few days. My throat is still sore, but otherwise I'm feeling healthy now. It will be another point of interest for this attempt.
